The Photographer's Crutch

Editing can be

a crutch. There it is…. the cold hard truth. The only reason I can say this is because it used to be MY crutch. In my opinion, the most detrimental thing that could happen a new photographer is the discovery of PS actions. I remember when I discovered Yang and Ying…. all of you TRA action users know the lingo….I was amazed! You mean I could lighten and darken ANY part of my image? Just with one click?! All of a sudden my dark, underexposed faces were ok! All of my weaknesses in shooting manually were gone! Life was good! ….. or so I thought. What was really happening was that I stopped LEARNING and started ….

They both love

sweatpants and if it was up to Scottie, they would have worn them for some of their engagement session! Megan and Scottie are best friends and the more I learned about them, the more I loved them. Between their loved for sweatpants, Taco Bell, and Megan’s love for the blog, I knew they were quickly going to become one of “those” couples. Don’t worry, being one of “those” couples is a good thing! I called Michael after I left the session and I told him “Aww, Michael it was one of “those” couples…. ya know, those couples that LOVE their pictures, LOVE each other and are willing to go the extra mile for a good shot! AND they love the blog!! “.

Here they are!

Whew! What a RELIEF!!! I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to have invitations in the mail and DONE! This may seem like an easy task but let. me. tell. you!…… This was a process! I LONG process! I was so stressed when I had to figure out what these invitations were going to look like. I have seen SO many fun invitations and every cute idea I saw, I wanted to incorporate it! That just isn’t possible and when you try to design anything with multiple “looks” in mind, you’re in trouble! I just needed to figure out what our style was going to be and roll with it!… but this was overwhelming.

You can never

know what you’re going to get with a location. One thing I have learned from trial and error and from some other fabulous photographer’s with way more experience than I have… is that you have to work with what you’ve got! (not proper English, I know) I remember showing up to a wedding when I was first starting and thinking to myself…. oh my…. this location is miserable…there aren’t going to be ANY good portraits… I’m totally sunk. I was looking for the perfect spot, the perfect light and the perfect portrait. But what makes a portrait perfect? I was so concerned with looking for perfection that I missed my opportunity for originality.

I had never…

…done a Bridal Show before. I had heard of them and had considered looking into doing one but had never actually signed up. I was invited to be a part of the Greater VA Bridal show back in May and a agreed to set up a booth. It was fun displaying canvases and albums but to be honest, bridal shows and advertising are not the way my business works. My blog is my advertisment and my relationships with my clients are how I get future business. I hated meeting a bride at the show, handing her a postcard and after 10 seconds of talking to her, she would walk away to the next booth. That is just how it goes at a bridal show…
