Being Katelyn Alsop

  • A Break from the Norm

I’m in Charleston. If you follow me on Instagram you may know that. :) It’s not a conference…. it’s not business trip…. it’s not a networking event… it’s vacation. No speaking, no responsibilities and no leadership position. It’s awesome!! A few months ago, Michael and I were heading out for a non-work related trip and my good friend Julie told me “Have fun just being KATELYN ALSOP!”. That was just a simple comment but it made such an impact. This week is a “Katelyn Alsop” week.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you should know that JAMES is my middle/maiden name and my real last name is ALSOP! So many people don’t know that….. Michael gets called “Mr. James” on the regular!!! The truth is, a large majority of my life is spent being “Katelyn James” and I don’t get a lot of time to be “Katelyn Alsop”.

Katelyn James is a wedding photographer, blogger, speaker, educator and Katelyn Alsop is married to Michael Alsop, she’s a puppy-momma to Bokeh boy and loves time with girl friends. She enjoys decorating, taking pictures of architecture and traveling. This week is a week where Katelyn James is staying at home and Katelyn Alsop gets to enjoy being on vacation! I usually see friends at conferences and I ALWAYS have obligations when I’m with them. There is always something hanging over my head and there is always something that I need to be prepping for. This is why I am so thankful for this time away. I have nothing to do. I don’t have to put on a show or do a presentation and nothing is expected of me. My only job is to be KATELYN ALSOP while we’re in Charleston and I’m loving it!!!!!!

For those of you that haven’t had much time to just be YOU… make time for it. It’s refreshing, inspiring and rejuvenating!!!!

Ps. Where are some of the most-see places in Charleston?! I think this is my 4th or 5th trip here but I’m CONSTANTLY hearing of new places to try! Let me know what you recommend!!!

xoxo, Katelyn

There are two ‘things’ you have to do when in SC, if you haven’t already. Eat boiled peanuts, and a good bowl of shrimp and grits (preferably with cheese and bacon!;) Robby is from Charleston and he got me hooked on these! The boiled peanuts thing is a bit unusual at first, but it quickly becomes addicting! They’re mostly found at the roadside markets, but can also be found in some convenience stores :) have fun being Mrs. Alsop;)

    Hi Katelyn! (:

Charleston is best enjoyed with no set plans or agenda, so glad you’re getting to experience it with just having fun and taking it all in! Here are some of the new places you should definitely try! Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, St. Albans for coffee, Black Tap for amazing lattes and coffee, Butcher and Bee at lunchtime or Sunday brunch (seriously so so good), Leon’s Oyster Shop, Edmund’s Oast in the old village of Mount Pleasant (and while you’re at it visit the Pitt St. bridge), Sugar (on Cannon St. It has the best cupcakes tucked in the tiniest space with a ivy covered courtyard out back. So worth going to because it’s not busy and touristy), Cannon Green located on Spring St. for a nice dinner, and last but definitely not least Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits. These are to die for. Hope you enjoy your time!! (:

Ah! Have fun in Charleston! My mom grew up there and we’re headed back next week! If you want a peaceful day at a private beach, cross over the bridge into Mt. Pleasant, continue on till you reach Sullivan’s Island. It’s completely residential. You can park on a side street and head out to enjoy the quiet bliss by the sea without many other tourists around. Middleton Place Plantation is also gorgeous this time of year!

Folly Beach (if you haven’t been yet)!! My college roommate is almost a native Charleston gal and took me there for our first post-college road trip! So quaint and southern, you’re sure to love it! :)

Love this, Katelyn! It’s so important to take time to just be. It’s been so fun seeing all the pictures you and the other ladies have been posting on Instagram. I’ve definitely added Charleston to my list of cities to visit!

The BEST shrimp and grits Grant and I had while in Charleston was at a restaurant called Fleet Landing (for your GPS: 186 Concord St.)! It’s right on the water and has amazing, authentic southern seafood! I still dream about that dish :)

I love this! How true that is we often forgot ourselves to serve the others, or to work. Enjoy your little yourself time + vacation! :)

Hahah I totally get this. I literally am never called Jamie Watson and sometimes I miss it – especially because I’ve only had the name a year! I “miss” that part of getting married and feeling like a new person. ;) I’m same ol’ Jamie Delaine everywhere!!
