Purposeful Shooting | Shooting with the End in Mind

On a Wedding Day

there are so many things constantly running through a Photographer’s mind…. or at least there should be.  There should never be a time when a photographer has an extended period of doing NOTHING. Wedding day’s are too busy for that! There is always something that can be captured but so often photographers settle for doing the bare minimum. It’s easy to do when your feet are aching and your right arm feels like it’s about to fall off from holding up your 70-200 during a LONG ceremony. However, I have found that when you give it your ALL during the wedding day, the reward is great and your client is happy!

Finding "Your" Organization Style

Ask Anything ~ January 17, 2011

This process

took a long time. Finding a workflow that actually WORKED for me wasn’t an overnight concept. I tried numerous different techniques and I learned a ton a long the way.  That’s why I encourage all of you photographers out there to try to find YOUR OWN organization style because this is one of the many areas in this industry where copying may not be in your best interest. I say this because I experienced this! I had a TON of photog friends that fell in love with ShootQ and started running every aspect of their business through it. Brides can book online, contracts are online, etc….. and I wanted that! I wanted it all!!! ha! So I purchased ShootQ and starting playing

First Looks

Ask Anything ~ November 29, 2010

First Looks.

….they might possibly be the best new wedding trend out there. When I first heard about doing a “First Look” I thought to myself…”that’s cool… but I’ll NEVER do it for my own wedding”.  Ohh I can be SO wrong sometimes! Not only did Michael and I share a First Look on our wedding day, I also encourage ALL of my couples to do one as well! First Looks are amazing and SO incredibly helpful to photographers! I have had several photographers ask about First Looks recently and so I thought that maybe I should do an Ask Anything post about them! I’m definitely not a pro at shooting them but I have had more couples

Do you see "The Line"?!

Ask Anything ~ July 30, 2010

Do you see it?

…”The Line”, that is. Do you see “The Line” in your images?  I’ve started talking about “The Line” like it’s a living being. I’ll come home from a wedding and will be scanning through images (normally at 3am, bad bad bad) and I’ll see him…. “The Line”.  He shows up in the best of the best portraits, in the detail shots, bridal party shots. Any GOOD shot has to have a little bit of “The Line”.  Some other photographers have emailed me about composition and visualizing shots beforehand and really, I just depend on the two “L’s”… The LIGHT and the LINE.  Light is a whole other concept that we could spend years and years discussing.

White Balance

Ask Anything ~ June 27, 2010

White Balance

There are so many things to keep straight on a camera! If you are just starting out and trying to learn how to shoot manually, I feel for ya’! I really do. It’s hard and I definitely haven’t mastered everything yet. I’m still learning with EVERY shoot I do.  It’s a rare occasion for me to come home from a wedding and not have a new tidbit of knowledge. Photography is something that I will never master, but that makes it exciting! It will never get old! So a lot of emails have come in about White Balance (WB). Ohhh that dreaded white balance. If you’re like me when I first started out, the WB was the first thing I forgot. I was more concerned about shutter speed and aperture than anything else!
