Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

Denali & The Sound

  • Alaska | Part 2

was one thing we had been told to do in Alaska by my parents. They had recently visited Alaska and they advised us to try our best to take a tour of Denali by plane!! So we did! Andrew drove us to Talkeetna and we signed up for a plane ride!! In a tiny little plane! It actually wasn’t THAT small. It could have been much smaller! … But when you’re used to commercial sized planes, this was a whole other world!! It was amazing! The views were incredible and even though McKinley was covered with a cloud, it was still SO worth the small fortune that it cost. Some experiences are worth an extra splurge and we’re really thankful that we decided to make this happen!!

Matanuska Glacier & Other Adventures!

  • Alaska | Part 1

I get started, I think you should know just how this whole trip came about!! Michael and I grew up together with some awesome families with kids our age. We went to different schools and had different lives but somehow, we always stayed close and we’ll forever consider the Beale’s, Alsop’s, and Terry’s family! So Andrew Beale move out to Alaska with his wife Kayti several years ago and now Katie Beale and her fiance’ Tyler are staying with them before their big day. Katie and I joked about this trip. I remember standing in my living room after congratulating her and saying “oh my gosh! How amazing would it be to shoot your engagement pictures in Alaska?!!”

An Alaskan Coastline Engagement Shoot

  • Tyler + Katie | Engaged Part 2

to beat a glacier but I’m equally excited about this second part of Tyler and Katie’s engagement session because we were TOTALLY at the right place at the right time! If we had been just 5 minutes later, we would have been rained out and the shots on the water would have been hazy and grey. We pulled off of the Seward Highway just in time to catch some of the sun’s final rays because the storm clouds rolled in. You can actually see the storm coming in the background of the images! Tyler and Katie are such pros! We took ALL of these in a total of probably 45mins and that’s including travel time! Whew!
