Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

Our Love for Jimmy Fallon

  • Good Things

You may wonder what the point is for our “Good Things” category on the blog. Does this really have ANYTHING to do with photography? Or business? No, not really. But I actually think that if I thought about it long enough, I could make a parallel between Jimmy Fallon’s strong following and our approach to creating community with our brand! ha! But I’ll save that for another day. :) Our random “Good Things” posts are just little posts where I share about things we love. Right now, one of the things we’re loving is Jimmy Fallon.

A Sweet DIY Richmond Wedding

  • Steven + Jennifer

Backyard weddings are unlike any type of wedding. There is something so relaxed and welcoming about them. I knew as soon as I read Jen’s first email about what they were envisioning for their big day that this wedding was going to be a ton of fun! Steven and Jen wanted to get married at home… where they hang out with friends and family… where they feel most like themselves and where they want to spend the rest of their life. It seemed only fitting that they would start their new life together in a place that they hold so dear to their hearts. The only thing that was missing were the pups!! We missed their fur babies but with all of the hard work that a DIY wedding entails, it was probably smart to leave the puppies with the sitters. These two worked so hard pulling this day together. They did everything themselves and since our own wedding was in my parent’s backyard, I know the feeling!

How I Learned Photography

  • Ask Anything

a nice camera for YEARS! It was a DSLR back when they weren’t super affordable and not everyone had one. I would take pictures ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. I paid $1200 for this camera with my graduation money and I just knew that if I paid that type of money, I would take AMAZING pictures…. instantly. That’s how it works right?! Right. Nope. Not even close. I would snap away at EVERY event in college. Cookouts, parties, concerts, sports games, volleyball tournaments… you name it, I was there with my SUPER NICE CAMERA! I would take hundreds and then no one would see them until I spent time making them look extra awesome in iPhoto. People praised me for my skills. Was I really good?
