Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. A Libby Park and Rocketts Landing Engagement Shoot

  • Mark + Emily | Engaged

longer I live in Richmond, VA…. also known as “RVA”… the more I love it! I’ve been shooting a lot of Richmond engagement sessions recently and I have come to find that Richmond has it all. We have hills, water, old architecture, cobblestone streets, murals, etc. The list goes on and on! I’m a lucky photographer to live in a city that I love to photograph! It’s so much fun to shoot close to home and I absolutely loved shooting Mark and Emily’s sessions in Richmond last week because not only do they love Richmond as well, they fell in love here!!

Our Industry vs. The World

  • Recognizing the Difference

have spent the last two days in the mountains working on a special project with our friends Buddy and Jill. Bud is an organic Chicken farmer and Jill is a wedding photographer. Our conversations over dinner in downtown Lexington turned towards the industry and how it’s changed so much since I first started shooting in 2008. I started in college and went full time when I graduated and so I never experienced the corporate world or ANY other world for that matter. I never worked in a cubicle or had a boss. I also never experienced what it’s like to work with colleagues that were striving for the same promotion as you.

A Washington DC Wedding | Sequoia

  • Nik + Lindy

I have to admit that I was a little nervous about this one. The government is shut down and Lindy has always dreamed of having portraits with the national monuments! However, despite the barricades and massive amount of tourists, we made it happen!! The only way to shoot portraits around DC on a weekend with a gov’t shut down is to have an amazing group of friends in your bridal party AND you have to have a stretch hummer! :) Michael and I loved riding around DC with Nik and Lindy and their best friends. As we sat in the limo and headed to their ceremony, I was reminded of just how awesome this job is. We get to spend so much time with our couples on their wedding day and that’s such a privilege!! Nik and Lindy are just amazing. They have a story that not many have. Dating for 9 years is quite an accomplishment and so their wedding day was SUCH a celebration!!
