Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

Behind the Scenes

  • Joe + Emily | Part 3

is a FUN one! My sister’s wedding was absolutely amazing and it flowed smoothly because of so many people who helped us out!! Now, this isn’t the post where I’m going to breakdown how I shot her wedding. That’s coming later this week!! Today I’m showing some behind the scenes shots and thanking a VILLAGE of people who came alongside of us to make May 30th happen! Have you ever heard the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child?”… I hear it all the time when my friends with kids share about how much they need their family and friends. I think the same phrase could be used for wedding planning!

Are You Creative or Business Minded?

  • Ask Anything

I have a list in gmail (a LONG list) where I’m constantly adding blogging ideas as I receive emails with questions from photographers and others in the industry. The cool thing is that we have actually started getting more and more emails from SMALL BUSINESS owners and not just photographers. We have done some coaching for small business owners outside of the photography industry and I have to say, I LOVE IT! SO much of what Michael and I do in our business is transferrable to other industries. The whole idea of creating community? That’s not something that only wedding photographers are capable of!! (I’ll share more on that topic next week! Exciting things are in store!).

A Powel Crosley Estate Wedding | Sarasota Florida

  • Drew + Becca

After my sister’s wedding in Lexington, VA, Michael and I packed up our second round of suitcases and headed to the airport to fly to Florida. Call us crazy… but this was the BEST weekend for my sister to get married! They were married on a Friday which meant that we had a full day to travel and recover before shooting another wedding on Sunday. It worked out perfectly! Michael and were able to get 8 hours of sleep Saturday night and by Sunday, we were ready to roll again! We drank plenty of water and headed into Sarasota to start photographing Drew and Becca’s big day!! The humidity in Florida was still a little bit of a shocker… my poor hair. However, it wasn’t too terribly hot and the rain held off for us almost ALL day…. we had the perfect conditions for a gorgeous wedding day!
