HEADSHOT 1-8478

Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

A Tides Inn Wedding, Irvington Virginia

  • Trey + Lindsey

Wedding season is in full force! We love April weddings because the heat hasn’t hit yet and everything is still in the process of coming back to life! Sure, the pollen and the sneezing aren’t ideal but I’ve missed the leaves on the trees! Trey and Lindsey had the perfect scenario for wedding day weather. It was raining south of us and so we just had light cloud cover all day long! God gave us a natural soft box so that I could have free reign over the property of the Tides Inn! We shot portraits on the dock, on the pier, on the beach, etc and never had to worry about harsh lighting. I love those type of days! I also loved this day because I know that Trey and Lindsey have been looking forward to it for so long. Not only were they coming together as husband and wife but they were officially becoming a family with Trey’s son Tanner.

Historic Aldie, Virginia Engagement Shoot

  • Michael + Brittany | Engaged

decided that I’ll never be able to shoot in every beautiful location in Virginia… there are SO many adorable towns in this state! I have driven through Aldie and Middleburg several times in the last few years and it’s a gorgeous area!! The rolling hills and historic homes are stunning! It was the perfect location for Michael and Brittany’s engagement session!! I met Brittany almost a year ago but we have been exchanging emails for a while now!! She has been looking forward to her engagement and wedding pictures for some time and I’m so thankful that we had the most beautiful day to shoot them!

Finding Life / Work Balance

  • Ask Anything

be the first to admit that we’re not pros at this. We don’t have it all figured out and we don’t claim that we do things the “right way”… but Michael and I are often asked during coaching sessions and workshops “How do you balance LIFE and WORK”?! Well, we’re still working on that. However, over the past year we have been finding more ways to make sure that we’re balancing LIFE, WORK and TRAVELING. Michael and I have found that when we had weeks where we worked at home in the morning but then traveled to an engagement shoot in the evening, we didn’t feel like we could really get a lot done.
