Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

  • Coaching

hard to believe that over 50 photographers have had coaching sessions with us in the last year and a half! It’s really quite humbling actually. I love teaching… from the bottom of my heart, I just love it! It’s such a blessing in my life and I feel like I’m right where I need to be when I’m helping other photographers grow and take steps forward. A photographer once asked “Isn’t spending 9:30am to 6:00pm helping people DRAINING?!!”. Well, I’m tired afterwards but it’s not draining… I actually get energy FROM people and so I love coaching days!

An Old Town Alexandria Engagement Shoot

  • Jake + Lindsay | Engaged

were greeted by Jake and Lindsay in Founder Park and Lindsay had cookies in hand! My kind of girl!! These weren’t “break and bake”, they were homemade, custom decorated cookies that looked like they came straight from the bakery! They were beautiful! (And I say “were” because they are no longer with us…. they were delicious). Jake and Lindsay were all smiles and their laughter made their shoot so joyful and so much fun! We walked the streets of Old Town Alexandria and found little nooks and crannies to shoot in!

A Grey and Yellow Mechanicsville Wedding

  • Evan + Patricia

It’s a very exciting feeling to walking into a bridal suite and find out that all of the bridesmaids follow your blog! I knew Patricia had followed my work for a while but I had no idea that her friends did as well and so that was such a fun surprise! I love wedding days like Evan and Patricia’s! They know me and my work and so they ROLLED through their portraits because they trusted me! Their bridal party rocked and rolled through my cheesy poses in record time and that meant that Evan and Patricia had an amazing amount of time for their portraits! Talk about an ideal wedding day!! It was beautiful. 70 degrees in November? You can’t ask for a better wedding day! The leaves in central Virginia hit their peak this past week and so the colors were just amazing for Evan and Patricia’s big day!
