Hi there! i’m katelyn.

Hello, and welcome to the KJ Blog! I'm Katelyn James, and my husband Michael and I are a wedding photography team based in Richmond, Virginia. We hope you grab some coffee (or a diet coke, in my case) and enjoy viewing our latest work, browsing resources for photographers, and getting a little peek into our life!  Read more...

A Coral and Teal Hampton Wedding

  • Jonathan + Anna

We turned off the interstate with 2 hours to kill before we started shooting Jonathan and Anna’s wedding day. You never know how 64 is going to treat you and so we left with plenty of cushion time. As we pulled up to the church, I realized “I know this place!”. It was the same church that our friends Mandy and Josh were married in last May! It’s gorgeous and so southern! I was already aware of the location around the church but we decided to take a little drive to waste some time and we found a beautiful abandoned home that just so happened to match the wedding colors!! SCORE! When it came time for bridal party portraits, we made sure the house wasn’t occupied and then we made great use of the beautiful porch! It was perfect! There are so much hidden gems in that part of downtown Hampton! It almost resembled a downtown Charleston wedding!

July 2013

  • The Snapshot

If you’ve been following these “Snapshot” posts for a while, you’ve probably noticed that some months are better than other. There are some months when I have plenty of time to really think about goals and plan out the month ahead and then there are some times when I can barely keep the next few days straight! This month is a mix of both! It’s going to be a little busy at the beginning of the month and then by the end of July, we’ll be entering into a few weekends of rest! WOOHOOO! We’re SO thankful! To all photographers out there, I HIGHLY recommend taking some Saturdays OFF in the middle of wedding season.

A Purple and Grey Stevenson Ridge Wedding

  • David + Emily

Maybe it was the beautiful venue… or the incredibly sweet first look…. or Emily’s dad’s ability to simultaneously scare you and crack you up with his sarcasm…. whatever it was, Friday’s beautiful Stevenson Ridge wedding was a BLAST to be a part of. David and Emily captured my heart instantly during their engagement session back in the fall and I have been looking forward to their wedding day for QUITE some time now! I remember driving to their engagement session right after leaving a meeting about possibly building the new house… CRAZY how much can happen in 6 months right?! It’s also crazy what can happen in ONE DAY! After the span of 30 minutes, David and Emily went from being engaged to promising FOREVER to one another!! Just like that, they were husband and wife and a beautiful new family was formed! The excitement on both of their faces when they were announced as Mr. and Mrs. Roop was priceless!
