A Sweet DIY Richmond Wedding

Backyard

weddings are unlike any type of wedding. There is something so relaxed and welcoming about them. I knew as soon as I read Jen’s first email about what they were envisioning for their big day that this wedding was going to be a ton of fun! Steven and Jen wanted to get married at home… where they hang out with friends and family… where they feel most like themselves and where they want to spend the rest of their life. It seemed only fitting that they would start their new life together in a place that they hold so dear to their hearts. The only thing that was missing were the pups!! We missed their fur babies but with all of the hard work that a DIY wedding entails, it was probably smart to leave the puppies with the sitters. These two worked so hard pulling this day together. They did everything themselves and since our own wedding was in my parent’s backyard, I know the feeling!

How I Learned Photography
HOW-I-LEARNED-PHOTOGRAPHY

I had

a nice camera for YEARS! It was a DSLR back when they weren’t super affordable and not everyone had one. I would take pictures ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. I paid $1200 for this camera with my graduation money and I just knew that if I paid that type of money, I would take AMAZING pictures…. instantly. That’s how it works right?! Right. Nope. Not even close. I would snap away at EVERY event in college. Cookouts, parties, concerts, sports games, volleyball tournaments… you name it, I was there with my SUPER NICE CAMERA! I would take hundreds and then no one would see them until I spent time making them look extra awesome in iPhoto. People praised me for my skills. Was I really good?

Dan + Kathleen

An Army Navy Country Club Wedding

As I

was talking to Dan and Kathleen’s planner while shooting their gorgeous reception details, she mentioned that she liked to call the style of this wedding “Kate Spade meets Charleston” and I couldn’t agree more. This gorgeous day had Kathleen’s style written all over it and it was simply stunning. There wasn’t a detail left undone. As I was shooting all of Kathleen’s Kate Spade inspired bridal details, I knew that this was going to be one beautiful wedding day! And it was! Dan and Kathleen were married at the historic Dahlgren Chapel on the campus of Georgetown University. This quaint little church is situated right in the heart of campus. As we arrived to the ceremony, the bag piper was already playing and a few guests were starting to arrive. Anytime there is a bag pipe player, the ceremony seems extra epic to me!

Align Album Design

Who Wants to Get Their Life Back?!
ALIGN-GIVEAWAYR

I’ve

mentioned this before in other posts, but the key to GROWING is letting go. Outsourcing things that we don’t HAVE to do it saving us time and is actually MAKING us more money because we’re not stuck behind the computer doing countless hours of work that someone else would love to do. Instead, we’re out doing what we love and what yields the profit! If you’re a photographer, I want to ask you this… How many of you out there have had “Make album changes to “So & So’s Album” on your to-do list for weeks… maybe even months?!

The Signs of Professionalism
3-C'S-OF-PROFESSIONALISM

Sometimes

people ask me what it means to be a PROFESSIONAL photographer. Like, when do you go from being a young person that knows how to shoot manually and who gets paid for work to a PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. Is there a program to do or a badge you can wear?! haha I have no CLUE when I became a “professional”… and to be honest, I don’t think this is a title that you obtain at one moment. I think there could be a dozen blog posts written about what makes one a “professional” shooter. Today I’m just going to offer a few thoughts on the subject!
