What to Wear?!
Ask Anything ~ September 6, 2011
So many
photographers ask me what I wear to weddings. I tell them I wear DRESSES and they GASP! Well, I don’t really know if they gasp, but their response is something like this: “Really?, Isn’t that restricting?! And aren’t you uncomfortable?!”. The answer to those questions is no. I really love it and I feel more comfortable in a cute dress than in anything else. I want to look like a “Professional Guest”. I have attended weddings where the photographers wear what looks like a black jumpsuit…not cool. If that works for them, that’s great! … It just doesn’t work for me. I want to blend into the crowd and still look stylish and professional. I’m a direct

representation of my brand at EVERY wedding I shoot. Some photographers don’t really dress up too much for weddings because they”re working and sweating and moving around constantly… well there is a way to be professional, stylish AND practical! These pictures show me in my FAVORITE wedding outfit. I LOVE this $40 Target dress! When I wore it to shoot my cousin’s wedding, the zipper got stuck when I was trying to get it on and for a few minutes, I thought it was a goner! AHHH!!! However, my dad fixed it and it’s all better. Whew! Daddy can fix anything:)
So I love this dress for many reasons. It has ALL the qualifications for a good “shooting” dress. Here are my qualifications:
1. It can’t show sweat
2. Modest is Hottest…(yes I just said that) It can’t be too short or too low cut in the front.
3. POCKETS
4. Breathable!
5. Fashionable!
6. Durable!
Now I know that a Target dress that gets used over and over is not going to last years and years. So next wedding season, I’ll go on a hunt for a NEW shooting dress that meets my specifications!! My point is, I think it’s important to LOOK PROFESSIONAL & STYLISH at my weddings. People are watching and potential clients are at every wedding and they are looking to see how you present yourself and your brand! However, this is just me and my opinion!
** For all of you out there that ask “How do you squat down or move around?”. Well, I just do it! This past wedding I was shooting and squatting in the middle of the road and if you squat with your knees together, there really isn’t an issue!**
Thank you to Michael for getting up and doing a 5 second photoshoot of his wife in the front yard… I promise the neighbors didn’t see.

Karena Dixon: ( September 6, 2011 6:23 pm ) Katelyn...you are so cute. You could wear a paper bag and make it look good:) Sadly I'm not graceful enough to sport a cute dress while shooting weddings. I have a clumsy nature which requires pants. I normally wear all black but try to keep it cute. Aside form the Dansko clogs which save me at the 12 hr days. Thinking about investing in a cuter pattern.
Lexi: ( September 6, 2011 6:19 pm ) seriously, you are just too darn cute. Love the dress...and yes!! Modest IS hottest. You go girl.
Elizabeth: ( September 6, 2011 5:51 pm ) you look ADORABLE!!! so cute! :)

Mallory: ( September 6, 2011 5:20 pm ) What I dislike about these photos....is all the LEAVES ON THE GROUND... summer really is gone, isn't it. Cute dress, I've gotten my favorite shooting dresses at Target too!!!
Anna Burke: ( September 6, 2011 5:08 pm ) Look at you! So cute - and Michael's photography skills are pretty awesome. AND I REALLY love Clare's comment - I love her :)
Clare: ( September 6, 2011 4:28 pm ) Look at you! You're like a real life fashion blogger right now! Will you please wear a giant evening gownt o my wedding? It would make my life :)
Arielle: ( September 6, 2011 4:16 pm ) I wear a dress, too! Yay for wedding photographers who also look cute!
McCall: ( September 6, 2011 4:00 pm ) Ahhh! I shot my first wedding yesterday...I wore a high necked, sleeveless black dress with black cardigan...it hit the knee, was a slim sheath underneath and then a chiffon overlay with black and pink roses, so I could move...it had front pockets that fit my two lenses I used most during the wedding...and cute black flats. I felt professional and comfy...dresses all the way! :) Thanks for posting this, Katelyn. :)
Jessica Horton: ( September 6, 2011 3:56 pm ) .... and I made my hubs do a shoot of me on Saturday night lol
Jessica Horton: ( September 6, 2011 3:54 pm ) SHUT UP! I'm about to blog the same thing!!!! I always get strange looks when I tell people I wear a dress to weddings.... My goal is always to look like a wedding guest, not a photographer!
admin: ( September 6, 2011 3:53 pm ) @alicia I have a few! But this is my favorite!! :):)
Laura Fiore: ( September 6, 2011 3:49 pm ) CUTE! and completely appropriate. I too, want to look like a professional guest because sometimes that second shooter catches you in the photo...don't want to stand out in a bad way!
Alicia Candelora: ( September 6, 2011 3:49 pm ) Love it and I totally agree with your theory on looking like a professional/guest. Question: Do you wear this same dress to every wedding or do you have a few? I find that I go through a fashion crisis every Saturday morning (or Friday night).
