A long time ago…. like a year ago I believe, I create a few mini videos for my website company Showit to use for a project they were working on. I recently realized that I NEVER shared them with my people!!! …. and that’s you guys! :) I receive questions weekly asking about anything from what I wear to weddings to how do you shoot bridal details and how do you do it consistently? This details question is a great one! It’s hard to shoot really awesome, cohesive details when you only have 30-40 minutes before the bride is getting in her dress! The trick it to think of a theme and stick with it. This is all because of the album…

which is the end product! And when you shoot cohesively for an album, it makes your work flow better in a blog post as well! A bride’s detail shots should match the look and feel of the wedding day but sometimes, you’re not a in getting ready location that matches the look of the venue where you’ll be shooting the rest of the day! So this video will help explain how I handle situations like that!! I’m actually really excited to share this because I think it will be super helpful for some newer and more experienced photographers out there that struggle in this area! Ps. Bokeh makes a little debut half way through. He was only 10 months at the time! Cutie!! :) (Ps. Video is BELOW, not at the opening of the post!)

Hi Katelyn! Thank you so much for all the time and effort you spend into photog education! I recently discovered your site and have been spending hours just drinking in all the richness you provide! Quick question for you, if you don’t mind…what is your favorite lens for detail shots? I currently use a Sigma 85 mm but find that the crispness and the telephoto look seems to be missing from my images. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

    • Katelyn James reply

Hi Melissa, I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying the site and content :) I primarily shoot details with my Canon 100 Macro 2.8, to read more about our lenses and what we like to use them for visit our education site (

    Hi Katelyn,

I’m based in the UK, I’ve been doing photography for a few years now but in terms of a business only started setting up fully in the last 6 months. I do weddings and portraits. I came across your work online, it’s incredible. I’ve been reading your blog and watching your videos for a little while now and I just wanted to say a really big thank you because your advice is soooooo helpful and genuinely full of useful content which is hard to find. I just wish I lived in the U.S so I could attend one of your workshops so if you’re ever in the UK please let me know hahaha :-). Anyway, thank you again so much. Also quick question, I saw on You Tube that you did some 4 week critiquing sessions with various photographers and I was just wondering if you do anything like that now and how would I sign up?! That would be awesome. Hope to hear from you soon! Big wave from the UK.

Hi Arleen! Thanks so much, you are too sweet! :) The only resources we offer that would really be available for you overseas, outside of the blog content would be products in our store ( and our online video-based courses, The KJ Consistency Course and later this year, The KJ Posing Course (! At this time we don’t offer any online coaching sessions. So sorry :(
