• I'm Mobile!

tax season… a season that we all dread. We have a great CPA that takes great care of us but no one really LOVES tax season. We’re very thankful for a great year financially but we are NOT looking forward to April 15th. Yikes. Anyway! Since we have been gathering records, receipts and documents for our tax return, it reminded me of a purchase that I am SO THANKFUL for!! This past November I was fed up with my laptop. Was it broken? No…. but it was MASSIVE. I bought that 17″ MacBookPro before I entered the “traveling” season of our business.

The apple guy that sold it to me didn’t tell me that it was so heavy that my computer bag would give me back aches and that the screen was so large that it wouldn’t even OPEN on airplanes! There wasn’t enough space!! Now don’t get me wrong… I’m thankful for a laptop that lasted me several years. However, I couldn’t edit on that laptop. The screen wasn’t even close to my iMac calibration. I even calibrated it… multiple times!! It just wasn’t right. For a girl that’s super picky about white balance, this was an issue. I could only edit on my iMac and this past year I realized that this was a very crippling aspect of my business.

So the end of wedding season rolled around and we didn’t have a ton of big expenses this year to help cut down our taxes and so we went to the Apple store. It was time. My mother inherited my mammoth sized MacbookPro and I got a 15″ Retina MBP…. and my life hasn’t been the same. I’m serious. You may think I’m being dramatic here but I’m not!! I’m dead serious. I bought this laptop and it was by far one of the GREATEST investments we made lsat year!! Why? Because I am COMPLETELY mobile.

Ohhhh the FREEDOM!!!!!! I edit, blog, email, design, present, cull, etc on this new machine and I’m in love. Was it a large investment? Yes. But it was a SMART investment. This new computer has given me the freedom to run my business ANYWHERE and that’s priceless. I’m truly in love!! The sad part is that I haven’t worked at my desk in months! I’m actually making myself use my iMac for several hours during the workday just because sitting at my desk makes me feel more productive… but I love that I can edit on my couch with Bokeh on my lap whenever I want to.

Not only is this new laptop great for editing… it’s FAST. Having a fast computer is such a time saver for my workflow and I should have upgraded sooner!!

So if anyone is thinking about investing, I highly recommend the 15″ MacBook Pro! We upgraded the RAM and that was a smart decision!! I’m currently riding to our hotel in Raleigh and I just culled the engagement shoot from this evening. I’m thankful for a husband that has driven thousands of miles for this business and for this new little machine that allows me to GET STUFF DONE!   Ok that is all. Happy weekend everyone!!!!!

I upgraded to the 15″ MBP this summer too! I absolutely love it. I don’t know how I could ever go back to the non-retina display. Mu husband has the 17″ MBP from about 4 years ago and We hate how big it is too! And I agree about editing from the couch – it’s great! But I would probably get a little more done sitting at my desk…So glad you enjoying your new Computer!

Ahh! Just when I thought I had finally at least decided on a 13 inch MacBook (specs undecided) now I’m not sure if I really want the 15 inch because the 13 inch might be too small for editing! I don’t know what to do! Haha. This was a great post though!

You may have convinced me into buying a new machine here in the next year! I just upgraded the ram in my 13 in MacBook Pro (2009edition), and it still is a little lackluster on performance.

We also upgraded the hard drive to 1 TB

Ok, this always freaks me out because I think I won’t be able to transfer my LR and PS over easily and all of my presets/actions. However, I really want to be mobile and this post has me talked in to it! Thanks for sharing.

Are you transferring docs and images back and forth , are you just choosing where you want to put them (mobile or at your desk), or using an external options-dropbox or hard rive…..or something else?

I love my 15 inch MBP…it is great for mobile use. I purchased mine just for our trip across the country, but now it’s all I use :)

Awesome Katelyn! We love to match up our MbP with the Thunderbolt Display . It pairs perfectly with the MbP ! An amazing combination!

I upgraded to a new 15″ MBP this january with all the RAM upgrades and all that jazz… it is truly AMAZING! Turns out the reason I thought I needed it, wasn’t my problem… it was my external hard drive all along! At least I have a new computer :)

I love editing on my 15″ MacBook Pro too! I’m glad I’m not the only one! Other photogs think I’m crAzy but I love the mobility of it all.

Hey KJ, I see where you said you guys did upgrade to the 1TB hard drive. I was just curious if you had thought about going with an SSD drive. I run dual drives in my MacBook Pro, with the SSD as my main drive and it’s super fast!

OMG, I also went from a 17″ MBP to a 15″ MBP Retina exactly a year ago… although I miss the big screen from time to time, i was frustrated with how slow my 17″ was (i got it in 2008 when I was still a wedding planner). It was just time to upgrade and boy is this 15″ fast AND the retina display really makes a difference. So glad you got one too! :)

I’m thankful for your husband as well! My husband and I tried working together and let’s just leave it at “it didn’t work out.” Not our marriage, we just aren’t business partners and Michael must be a very special (patient) man to be such a faithful partner in all the areas he serves :)

Katelyn, Qiuck Question!!! I have both a MBP and a IMAC…which I bought in reverse order as you… is there a way you “share” from both your MBP and iMAC? So you can edit unfinished items on LR or PS from either computer???

I switch between about 5 different monitors during the day when I’m designing and the 15″ MBP with Retina is by FAR the greatest thing to look at when it comes to displays. After using it for a while and switching to a non-retina (or even an Apple Cinema Display) I’m rubbing both my eyes and the screen convinced that they’re blurry!
